I wonder how they will actually make money off of that? Which software shop, developer(s), etc. will actually pay good money for a stolen game engine, and not get caught eventually?
I wonder if it compares to thieves stealing a famous work of art and trying to sell it, without getting pinched.

True - so the reason may be non-profit then: competition trying to delay release? Ransom? Disgruntled ex employee? Punter who really didn't like having to pay loads more to get the game he thought he'd originally paid for?

having access to the game source code will make it much easier for people writing cheats.

Perhaps they will post it on the dark web for free access?
I just don't see how the hackers are not going to get caught here, or the people using stolen source code for a game engine such as Frostbite. I don't think these people have thought things out very well here.

Not for one person, but lots of people will pay $1-50 (not sure how much the cheats normally go for) which is enough to run a scummy business off of. Cheating in multiplayer games is a serious problem because there are so many sad sack basement dwelling losers who want to be on the top of the leaderboards without actually putting in the effort to get good. If there are resources to be earned farming content there'll be a market for bots to do it; both for people farming their own and if trade is enabled buying the items with cash.
