Okay let me start by saying how much I love the ESP32. It's a 32-bit dual core SoC with wifi and bluetooth for less than $10, what's not to love?
But... Espressif, come on. You made a great piece of hardware, and I want to unlock all of its fancy features.
I ditched the Arduino framework and started coding directly against the ESP-IDF (the dev framework Espressif made specifically for the ESP32)
All is good, woo! I have access to the full STL, to filesystem mount points, to the humble printf() - all the things I couldn't get under Arduino.
Except...
The SPI bus drivers for the ESP-IDF seem to be absolute *garbage*. I've written ESP32 based drivers for an ILI9341 display adapter for both ESP-IDF and the Arduino framework, and the Arduino one runs at 40MHz and I can only top the other one out at 26MHz! Furthermore, with the ESP32 SPI drivers there seem to be timing issues. Until my good logic analyzer gets here I can't know for sure, but it looks like the SCLK line is lagging behind the data lines by half a tick. For this or some other reason I cannot get the ESP-IDF to talk to e-paper/e-ink displays at all.
Why go through all this effort to make a framework for your hardware, and then botch the SPI implementation for it, all the while making a *good* implementation of it for someone else's (Arduino) framework?!
What the heck am I missing?

That's a bit bizarre - mind you, I see a lot of iOT work at the moment and I shudder when they use a serial port GPS integration rather than I2C or SPI.
I'll be learning 'ROS' soon, I missed a really nice job in Ag-Tech here because I wasn't prepared to lie on my CV - that being said, yes, it's not an O/S, and I do know messaging, so I could have bluffed my way through mqtt etc

So Firefox has updated itself - completely hosing all my login cookies such as for CodeProject  , but that's another story - to version 89.0. A disturbing behavior of it is that anytime I make the textbox in the body (i.e., the one that is in the center of the window) the active control (i.e., by clicking in it) and start typing, the active window automatically shifts to the textbox in the menu bar. I have tried looking for a setting that stops this, but I can't find it.
Any ideas?

I have FF 89.0 for Ubuntu.
There are visible differences, like the "New Tab" page (particularly the shortcuts), but I don't see the behaviour you describe.
And my CP login cookie survived unscathed (which is just as well, seeing I don't have a copy of my KeePass db on this machine).

Suffering from a bad case of audiophilia, and with the climate out here warming up, I wanted a very quite fan for the sitting (listening) room. The problem is that even the least mains hum - and fans are notorious for this - is a disaster, as the the room dimensions are roughly 6.5m X 6.5m. The wavelength of 50 Hertz AC in warm air? 6.5M.  I get standing waves all over the place to the extent that I have use a graphic equalizer to damp any music at 50 Hertz to an acceptable level.
On a shopping trip on Thursday I came across one that truly was silent - seven weirdly shaped blades, a rigid, non-adjustable column and zero hum or vibration, so presumably a DC motor. It was the most expensive fan of its type in the shop, and twice what I thought I would pay, but I bought it anyway. As I walked to the cash desk with the young sales lady, I asked if it had a remote control. She replied in the affirmative - I just need to download the app to my 'phone!
So now I can be on the other side of the planet and control my fan anyway I want - speed, swing, elevation, even 'natural air', whatever the ![Elephant | [mastadon]](https://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/Images/elephant.gif) that is. How incredibly useful this will be when I am hot but not in the same place as the fan - I can still turn it on. 
Actually, being a paranoiac as well as an audiphiliac, and in light of the fact that the fan and app are from Xiaomi, I suspect it has nothing to do with user convenience, and all to do with Chinese paranoia. I reported here a few years ago about an unbelievable licence agreement from Xiaomi when I bought a hardware router made by them. Essentially, I would have subjected myself to Chinese law anywhere on the planet - and probably off it as well! I returned the router under EU law which stipulates that non-agreement with a licence first presented post sale voids the sale. The licence agreement for this product is very little different. Criticism of China on social media would appear to be close to fatal. That reminds me - I must check the fan for Semtex and C-4.
If Xiaomi imagine that I am going to let this thing access my local network, I am afraid they are in for a severe disappointment.
Of course, as I haven't accepted the licence agreement, I haven't agreed not to hack it...
