To be fair, IKEA makes furniture of pretty good quality.
A friend of mine makes furniture for super yachts, the kind Arabian royalty has.
Even they get parts from IKEA, because it's just pretty good and you can't get that kind of quality cheaper anywhere.
He even bought it for his own home despite him being against it at first.
When shopping for furniture he gave it a chance and decided that the price of IKEA furniture gave you a better price/quality ratio than "good" furniture does.
Even from his suppliers he couldn't get wood cheaper to make it himself

I know exactly nothing about wood.
My friend does and told me the wood he found at IKEA was good and cheap.
Not the chipboard stuff, mind you (although that was also cheaper than he could get)

To put some balance to that comment.
Ikea is experts at getting exactly the right quality for the intended purpose.
Buy a kitchen, and it will easily last you twenty years of daily use. (if assembled correctly)
Buy a bookshelf and fill it with (not to heavy) books and it will do the job of storing them just fine. But if you use said bookshelf for anything else, what so ever, if will quickly disintegrate.
The trick to be happy with your Ikea purchase is to never stray from the products intended purpose.
Also, the purpose of an Ikea couch is to be replaced every ten years or so.

The main problem here is that they probably won't last twenty years, as we're finding out with our "proper" couch. (That cost about four times as much)
