My first hard drive was one I bought for my first computer - Amstrad 1640.
It cost more than the computer did, and was a massive 32MB (and so fast - av Seek time of 25ms if I was lucky!)
Compared to the twin floppies it replaced though ... it was just so wonderful.

I also had one of those, couldn't believe how much free space I had to play with.

Yep. But most of my games still needed the floppies for copy protection reasons ...

I don't remember the brand of the first hard drive I bought was.
I do remember thinking, "40 MB how could anyone use that much storage?"

That's the size of the Diamond Rio PMP300, the first standalone MP3 player to make it to market. It could hold a whole album!!...presuming every track was encoded at 128kbps or less...
Yeah, even back then, it wasn't all that great...and somehow I got the brilliant idea that getting two of them (one still in its original box today) would be awesome, 'cuz they'd become such valuable museum pieces...

I have similar on my home laptop today ito download size. 998 packages to update. On my work laptop it's 1.7 GB to download, but it was also more up to date than my home laptop. Surely there must be a better way to package updates or make them smaller to download.

I used to try to keep my VS installer folder up to date, using some obscure installer command-line switches...essentially, it downloaded the latest version of every package it knew about. I abandoned the idea when it started to consistently download 30+GB every month. So now I just let every instance of VS I have download what it thinks it needs, and it tends to stay below 2GB...even though it does mean each instance of VS I have might end up downloading the same files.
I miss ISO-based installers.

Pure luck
