Raised the flag to one of the more approachable R&D guys, turns out the current version hadn't been updated fully (?). So I checked it a half-hour later and guess what!

So I expect that it is not really R&D even though they call it that.
To be fair then it isn't really just "politics" but rather that there is no process at all.
I am presuming there are no or little written requirements, no project planning, no task planning and perhaps little or no disaster planning either.
So realistically even the code problem you found is not significant in comparison to that.

I have up to now, remained Covid free, by being generally unsociable. I for one found the lock down a chance to catch up with 'jobs' like decorating, plumbing ('naa, Gaffer tape will hold it' until I get chance)...

I can strongly recommend the "don't catch it" approach - it';s way better than getting it! 
Unfortunately, Herself works in an old folks home and residents with various degrees of dementia and relatives who are in the will already don't do a lot for keeping any bugs under control. She went down a couple of days before I did, so it's pretty obvious where it came from.
But Covid did have a good effect even there - they haven't had Norovirus for three years and they normally get an outbreak every few months ... 
I have to say though that the vaccines seem to have helped - the latest bout was nowhere near as bad as the original even if they didn't prevent us getting it.

Herself was positive 3 days before me, so you probably should assume you are also positive even if the first test comes back -ve.
