1. The lounge is for the CodeProject community to discuss things of interest to the community, and as a place for the whole community to participate. It is, first and foremost, a respectful meeting and discussion area for those wishing to discuss the life of a Software developer.
The #1 rule is: Be respectful of others, of the site, and of the community as a whole.
2. Technical discussions are welcome, but if you need specific programming question answered please use Quick Answers[^], or to discussion your programming problem in depth use the programming forums[^]. We encourage technical discussion, but this is a general discussion forum, not a programming Q&A forum. Posts will be moved or deleted if they fit better elsewhere.
3. No sys-admin, networking, "how do I setup XYZ" questions. For those use the SysAdmin[^] or Hardware and Devices[^] forums.
4. No politics (including enviro-politics[^]), no sex, no religion. This is a community for software development. There are plenty of other sites that are far more appropriate for these discussions.
5. Nothing Not Safe For Work, nothing you would not want your wife/husband, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your mother or your kid sister seeing on your screen.
6. Any personal attacks, any spam, any advertising, any trolling, or any abuse of the rules will result in your account being removed.
7. Not everyone's first language is English. Be understanding.
Please respect the community and respect each other. We are of many cultures so remember that. Don't assume others understand you are joking, don't belittle anyone for taking offense or being thin skinned.
We are a community for software developers. Leave the egos at the door.
cheers,

With the SOTW gone, I saw some politiking taking place which brought a Garth Brooks song to my attention. I've never cared for his style of music, but I must say this is good (well, the lyrics are phenomenal - the rest sounds typical of that style to me): We Shall Be Free - Garth Brooks

After fighting with this 10 yo PC that is cluttered and balky, and can't run Win 11, I finally bought the components last night for its replacement. I'm building it on an ASUS MB - my first from that company - with the Z690 chipset. The brains will be supplied by a Core i9 12900KF CPU running at 3.2 GHz (that boggles the mind, as my first CPU ran at an impressive 1 MHz!). For memory I'm settling for a mere 64 GB of DDR5 RAM with a 1TB SSD. Graphics will be provided by a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti card from ASUS.
Hopefully this will be able to run AutoCAD and ESRI ArcGIS with too much lag. The best part is that, a couple of calls I was holding leapt up in price this morning by enough to more than pay for the new system, so I sold them!
Happy Friday! !

Myself I read it three times trying to figure out what it was referring to.

Fixed it... and I checked the order, too, just in case. All good.

Yup - caught me napping. Let's make that GB and call it good...

I seem to remember a time when you could buy 64 MB sticks, but I doubt they are available today off the shelf! And if they were, they should have been so cheap that the price would have triggered you as being wrong.

Congrats on the new system.
Always nice when it's paid for/free!

I recommend you to go with more drives. One M.2 SSD for System, a normal SSD for working data and a HDD for long time storage.
With current prices... that should be quite affordable.

I agree, but I'm waiting to get the basic system integrated, then I'll start adding stuff. It's hard to tell from ads what will fit. I did get a flyer from Newegg today offering a 18TB WD Gold HDD for $299. That's incredibly cheap; I paid more than that for the external drive I bought for my Apple IIc! I'm also considering flushing the old system and using it for network storage. IIRC, I built it with 3x SATA drives attached to a RAID controller. That should do nicely.

I agree with Nelek. A larger HHD as your D drive to hold working data, etc.
Drive C (SSD) would be dedicated to OS.

I like ASUS a lot. My machine at home is an ASUS- love it.

With your set up you are good to go with AutoCAD and ArcGIS. I have i9-9900 @ 3.1 GHz with Intel with UHD graphics (not as powerful as your RTX 3060) and can run AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, and a number games just fine.

The oldest computer can be traced to Adam and Eve.
It was an Apple with extremely limited memory.
Just 1 byte. Then everything crashed.

If memory serves Adam and Eve ate "fruit" (not an apple) from the tree of knowledge, but that's OK an apple is a fruit. Apple has traditionally been named as the fruit from the tree of knowledge due to translations between Greek and Latin. However, your oldest computer story is still cleverly punned. I like it.

So I needed a simple bit of code to take an icon and convert it to 1-bit monochrome. I had to write it in C++ such that my friend could easily understand it and then port it to JS and make my website do it. I'm an idiot when it comes to web development.
I could not get it right. Could not.
One cup of coffee later:
using test_t = bitmap<alpha_pixel<1>>;
uint8_t test_data[test_t::sizeof_buffer(faAnchorCircleCheck_size)];
void gen_1bit() {
size_t i = 0;
size_t idx = 0;
size_t offs = 0;
uint8_t tmp = 0;
for(int y = 0;y<faAnchorLock.dimensions().height;++y) {
for(int x = 0;x<faAnchorLock.dimensions().width;++x) {
decltype(faAnchorLock)::pixel_type px;
faAnchorLock.point(point16(x,y),&px);
float luma =px.template channelr<0>();
if((luma>=.5)) {
tmp|=(1<<(7-offs));
}
++i;
++offs;
if(8==offs) {
test_data[idx]=tmp;
tmp=0;
offs=0;
++idx;
}
}
}
if(offs!=0) {
test_data[idx]=tmp;
}
}
Like magic.
Not difficult code, by any means, but it just eluded me. And yes, I could replace ifs with shifts and such but I didn't make this to perform - I made it to be able to be read by someone else and ported.

My health care provider has suggested I cut back on caffeine -- I wish decaf coffee tasted better than it does.

Decaf gives me nasty headaches.
Apparently, it can also raise cholesterol levels as well.
