The sad thing is people think the EEC would do this!

In fact EEC does worse than.

This is going on my arrogant assumptions. You may have a superb reason why I'm completely wrong.

It's what Noah Webster et al wanted to do. Don't forget that the population of the US at the time was a lot more German than English, and that English was only selected as the national language by a very small margin.
After its acceptance, the number of anti-British people involved in attempting to rationalise the spelling was immense.
But the spelling reform movement was a disaster for pretty obvious (and incredibly foreseeable) reasons, and all that remains of it is peccadilloes like "colo_r", "nite", and izes all over the place.
That's why I've never found this joke particularly funny -- the reality is actually funnier!

Oxford University Press standardises on -ize. -ize is actually more British, -ise is down to the influence of French.

Yup. Most words that can end with "ise" can also be spelled "ize", so it's all down to personal and local preferences.
Spelling doesn't actually make a blind bit of difference. Whether you write "colour" or "colour", I'll know precisely what you mean, so the communication is successful.
It gives people things to bitch about, though, so it keeps them happy.

I wouldn't be surprised.. People are very inventive and those from EEC which have a lot of "spare" time, they can think of who knows what...

Is that old joke still doing the rounds?

This is so old that it's been officially listed as defunct and no longer funny.

I first read this in print the 90s - and I only started using computers in 2001!
Goes to show you how old this joke is.
Cheers,

The EEC ceased to exist post Maastricht in 1992 so I guess the 90s is a pretty good guess at the joke's age

I distinctly remember the 90s print version said European Union, but like Dan says below, it's probably a rehash of an older joke.

The basic concept is much older than that. See Mayhem in ce Klasrum[^] (1946).

Did anyone else get and read it?
Hi, this is Jason Short. I am preparing to make some really large changes at VistaDB, both as a company, and in the product. I wanted to offer the VistaDB 4.0 Engine Source to all those with Developer Licenses before this happens. If you use VistaDB 4 in a product, you will probably want to buy the current 4.0 source code to ensure you can continue to work the way you do today using the current codebase.
I am not ready to announce anything yet, but the changes will impact every user. I am making this oppurtunity for everyone to purchase the 4.0 source at a fantastic price, before we make our changes. Read through the information below. But make your decision quick, the price will go up after June 21, 2010.
...
Seems they likely will discontinue their products?!?
Sad thing

Damn - I have just got the same email - and I just upgraded/renewed last month.

There seems to be a kind of frustration when reading between the lines. Maybe he couldn't sell as much licenses as expected to keep the company profitable?

I'd put my money on him selling it to a major DB vendor.

Which would be great in terms of continued development and support, I hope.
Hopefully he will make it better than MySQL did.

Why use VistaDB when there is Sqlite?
|
|
|
|
|
For a fast, simple, database in .NET with a direct access interface, VistaDB is pretty good. Years ago, we found it ran faster than SQLite--much faster on some operations--though this was before they ported the whole thing to .NET (I haven't looked at it since, so I have no idea whether it's faster or not.)
