Water melon is not food - it barely counts as a fruit.
Real men don't use instructions. They are only the manufacturers opinion on how to put the thing together.

Last week one of developers in my team told his co-workers how much is his salary. At the time i was on my vacation.
The next morning at the work, i saw others' face not look like good!!!though i could not figure out what has happend. At the evening when everybody was out, 2 of them asked me about increasing their saalry.Assume what has happend in my absence! We had some trouble during the rest of the week, calming down the employees not satisfy with their earnings.
So you guys out there, what is you firm policy on this? Do they tell you not telling your salary to others? Do you how much you colleague earns?

I don't know and don't really care what others make. This idiot should be fired for inappropriateness and the discord and disruption he has caused.

Really? I was thinking in the other direction: if I'm not even allowed to discuss people's salaries I'd call it oppression and quit.
Because, if you're not even allowed to talk about it, then there will be a reason for it - and it will be a bad reason. Such as people having wildly differing salaries for no apparent reason, other than that perhaps they are related to the boss or something lame like that.
If you're not allowed to discuss salaries, management can get away with favouritism (and is getting away with it, otherwise why wouldn't it be allowed?)
This sounds just as crazy as being fired for taking something out of the trash, in Germany they call that theft. Or charging your segway - stealing 1.5 cents of electricity. Insane stuff.

It's not a case being allowed to discuss it, it's a case proper office etiquette that you shouldn't discuss it.
The company should have a defined scale though so even you may not not the exact amount you will know the other person is not making a substantial amount more for doing the same work.

In the States you can't force your employees not to divulge their salaries to each other. However, many companies frown on it. In fact, doing so, is like two adolescents comparing sizes; it just seems dirty and wrong. Most people compare salaries at some point. The real trick is to make sure that every one's salary is equitable based on their contribution. If a low performer asks for a raise you then have ammunition to ask for more performance. However, high performers that find out they are underpaid compared to low performers just quit.
My personal policy is not to divulge my rate. Primarily because most people don't understand the expenses involved in being a consultant.

Are you kidding?
One of the first questions an American always asks you is "What do you make?"
My customary answer is not exactly KSS.

Salaries are confidential and should not be disclosed to other people in the company except on a need to know basis. That applies to the company, if he chooses to disclose his salary there is not much that can be done, although some companies may enforce a clause in their contract or conditions of employment. In my mind, it just shows the employee can't be trusted with confidential info, good luck getting a promotion or performance increase with that type of work ethic.

In my office I know everybody's salary, but then I sign the cheques.
But it is 'understood' that you do not discuss salary, and I have had to issue threats on this matter in the past.
I have worked in places where discussion of salary if a sackable offence, Granada and Whitbread, for example.

Apart from being appallingly stupid, I also believe it is unenforceable in law. What if two employees become engaged? Can they not discuss their salaries together? No, sorreeee, you're both fired.

Disclosure of f***ing what? His salary, his business and he can tell anyone he wants.

My company gave several people raises last year to bring everyone into line to get rid of this issue. People doing the same job should be paid the same. If some out perform others then a performance based bonus should be the way to differentiate, or the underperformers let go!
|
|
|
|
|
There're problems with doing it that way. Bonuses aren't guaranteed from year to year which makes budgeting based on the assumption that you'll always have on dangerous and lenders are leery of counting them as income for loan approval for the same reasons.

If nobody know's what anyone else is making, it's hard to establish what your worth is. Most people underestimate what they should be earning for a salary and management likes it that way. If the underlings find out what they're actually worth they start asking for what they're worth, and management doesn't like that. And that's why it's taboo to talk about your salary.
If anything I'd be for more openness in this regard. It makes discrimination (racial, gender or otherwise) much harder to carry out.
