It looks like it's no longer possible[^] to change the default email address, though I did change from an ISP based login to a hotmail login about a year ago, so I don't know why they changed it. 
My suggestion, though it's not ideal, is to create an alias on the live account and use it as the address for all emails and treat the current ISP based sign in like a username, then change all the notification options to use the alias.

Thanks, can I encourage users/readers to flag this as "I have this issue", and ideally leave a comment objecting to the Win8 repercussions of this awful decision, so that MS may feel the need to act fast to resolve this horrible mess.

I know from experience that this has been broken for at least 10 months, probably longer. I ended up just making a new account. I think its safe to say they consider this to be a non-problem and don't have any intention of ever fixing it.

It's one thing when your Windows Live account goes down though, another altogether when its tied to your Win 8 login.

I wanted to change the country on my profile (it was the only field I'd filled in), and it was the one field that was fixed...
But I clicked on a help / contact button on their website, and had a live chat with a MS chap within a minute, and he seemed pretty switched on and helpful.
Maybe you can't change this directly, but the behind the scenes folk can?
I too have my misgivings about this linkage, but it's easily fixed by having your own domain. You can let your Mum have her own email address there if you like?

Having my own domain won't help as there's no way to tie it to the Microsoft account once it has been created.

It may be a new Microsoft idea or a temporary condition or a Microsoft reaction to the "mediacenter key" Windows 8 installation hack and the like. Right now there is the "rename account" link just below the email that reports "the email account cannot be changed". It is too illogical to be permanent.
Anyway, the right thing to do is to use a Microsoft Mail (Hotmail?) for the Microsoft Account. It will not go away prior to Microsoft and Windows 8. It is always possible to do that, but all bonuses like additional Sky Drive space will be lost.
In the beta Windows times I have configured several Windows 8 machines. Now I have exactly one real Windows 8 machine and my language settings still occasionally change on their own. The worst inconvenience is that programs either see or not the Ctrl+Shift+0 shortcut.

in user accounts you can add another account, the option looks to allow you to add a microsoft account although I haven't tried it through to completion and the option may only be there because the PC i saw this on was configured with a Local account.
I did try a microsoft account but I didn't want to run my local applications as an email address as they log things to a server using the windows user name. So I then added a local account and deleted my microsoft account
This doesn't help if your mother has been using the appstore etc but it may help if the account is still new enough to be mostly unused

I recently tackled this and found that it's a known issue that email addresses or liveIDs can't be changed right now. I've used my own domain for years now, while that domain isn't working, and they send the email to my current email account.

Perhaps you could make a new MS Account, then use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate her data and settings over to it?

This is, partially, in response to the recent "CCCC" thread, but I am also curious to know your opinion in terms of media players, and, I feel that: if I start a new thread, it will get broader exposure than if I just add this to the "CCCC" thread.
Until recently, I only used VLC, then I began to notice that certain video files (.mkv format) showed a kind of grid-like pattern in the background that was visually disturbing: those same files, played in WMP, without changing any system settings in Win 7/64, or any settings in nVidia's settings for the GeForce 7100GS card, looked significantly better.
Whether the apparent difference in visual quality is due to my somewhat atypical (?) hardware configuration: nVidia GeForce 7100GS driving a six-year old, 720p capable, 32-inch LG teevee, via HDMI=>HDMI ... I have no idea.
On the other hand, certain video files, in several different formats, that play without error in VLC, cause a complete freeze of my Win 7/64 system when played with WMP: keyboard, mouse unresponsive; no BSOD; reboot required.
And, your verdict ... is ?

The only prOn I've seen in many years was when I last looked in the mirror. Here at home, I have spray-painted the only mirrors black, and I maintain careful vigilance outside the home, to avoid any stray reflections.
I also had to stop watching CNN when they began inserting subliminal photos of myself in newscasts. I still have not located the secret cameras they were using.
I hope you haven't had this problem, yourself.

I've been using mostly/only VLC on Windows and VLC/iTunes/Quicktime on Mac.
I don't think I ever was able to make WMP work on any PC that I touched (except maybe an early version that only played basic sound and video formats)

You might not be able to "see" differences, but it many cases it would provide speed improvements. Lots of things in normal PC usage use the GPU to do things. There are tons of video cards out there that are exponentially better than yours for under $75.

Mostly I use Media Player Classic for video and foobar2000 for music. I've never really had any problems with that combination.

I was using Crystal Media Player untill a few months ago, when I switched to VLC, and the range of file it plays pretty well is very good.
But...there is always a but...it does annoy me because there are files that VLC just shows a green screen for, or runs at four times normal speed, that WMP or CMP handle just fine.
And, then I got a Nexus, so I installed VLC on that. Oh dear. And took it right back off again, since the number of files it does play is so small...so for Nexus I am using DICE player instead.
If you get an email telling you that you can catch Swine Flu from tinned pork then just delete it. It's Spam.

Like Colin, I also use Media Player Classic but it's now called Media Player Classic Home Cinema (mpc-hc).
And the current/active development is at http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
You can download the x86 or x64. I also run Win7/x64. It works for me when I watch movies with happy ending.
