Check what processes are using the most CPU. E.g. Chrome has a sub-process called 'Software Reporter Tool' that can use a lot of resources - I just kill that one.

By setting max power state below 100% you essentially disable cpu boost.
If that lowers fan noise then some process was using a lot of cpu causing continuous boost.
Changing that setting is treating the symptoms, not the cause.

In my experience, changing the cooling policy to passive will slow down the computer to avoid it overheating and then will try to enable the fan when this is insufficient, also lowering the maximum processor state will avoid your computer reaching peak performance, so basically, you're trading performance for quietness.

I would find and kill processes that uses a lot of CPU, on Task Manager first.
Limiting the processor power means we get less than what we paid for.

Hello all, does anybody knows how I can get back the icons?
I only see white icons for all the shortcuts and also for the apps attached to the taskbar. Only edge in the taskbar does show the original icon.
I tried things like
- deleting the icon cache
- run sfc /scannow
without sucess.
The very strange thing: When I make a new shortcut, also this one will be shown only white.
I would never have guessed that I miss these little pictures that much

Try deleting all the icon cache located in %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
You might need to taskkill explorer or do it from an Administrative account.

Temporarily disable everything that caches to disk. Disable your hibernation file and disable Fast Boot. You may need to reboot and go into your UEFI BIOS to disable fast boot.

I disabled hibernate with 'powercfg.exe /hibernate off' and resterted. No success so far.
The BIOS is secured by password. I have to check with our IT.

If changing the icon does not work then there is something else going on here. Could you do one more thing?
Some security products completely take over the shell icon handler. Check the output of:
reg query hkcr\lnkfile /s Check to see if the GUID of IconHandler is something other than {00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
If you have a different GUID then most likely a security product has taken control of your shell icons.

So you think it is a security product issue? Our company uses 'traps'. I will ask IT to disable it for a trial.
Btw: I disabled hybernate, BIOS is secured by password. I have to check with our IT.

Ok,
It sounds like you are working at a secure facility. Don't modify the IconHandler GUID, leave it alone. There is a security related reason for taking control of the shell icon handler.

Don't worry I changed everything back, even the registry key. The Icons remain, but new shortcuts will be shown in white again. Now our IT can take over

Ahh, the naivety. Palto Alto generated a security incident the moment you modified that registry key.

Finally I got a closer picture about the facts are.
- My W10 is an upgraded W7.
- On W7 Traps registers an iconhandler
- Reinstall (update?) of traps on W10/2004 does not anymore install a iconhandler but also does not undo the one installed on W7.
I checked several W10/2004 installations in our company. Traps didn't install an iconhandler on these machines.
For me it means I can safely revert the iconhandler back to the standard windows handler.

Microsoft saw all the flack they get on this site for changing icons that they finally decided to screw it and just make all icons white. It's by design.
