Before there were really interesting things, but then our biggest project got frozen and I got moved to another dept.
Since day 1 there have been a huge number of situations that I cannot understand no matter how much I try.
If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you
Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.
Fun projects: New features and/or functions in current products, especially when they require a lot of new code. Most true when 'invention' and forethought is needed.
Monotony: Working through bug reports, especially on products that you didn't write originally but for which you now hold responsibility. Boring when this is a known issue and you have to explain for the umpteenth time why it doesn't work that way .
I retired from professional programming several years ago.
I now work much harder on my wife's ranch. I can expect the usual chores of feeding, watering, and caring for the livestock. The rest is a daily surprise — fix a new problem with the fence, help with a birth, cut firewood, collect eggs, ready livestock for auction, and on and on. On a ranch, there is always that proverbial "mile of fence" that needs fixing. I work harder as a retired person than I ever did behind a desk!
In my free time (what little of it there is), I keep my hand in programming. Most of the software I generate is for my own use here on the ranch.
I was lucky enough to end in that situation while also working from home. The 8 best months of my life. 80 hours of work done and 1300 paid for at full price. I played so many games and read so many books...
