Yo fit into the geek's world. What is so bad about it?

Get over this stereotyping about this geek=="cool" or "not cool". Just because we're technically competent doesn't mean we have to be socially/verbally/asthetically chanlleged to remain a "geek".

sure we don't have to be, but it comes naturally.

My Social Life (in the typical sense) is mostly poor now, but I intend to improve on it, and in 3 years or so hope to have an excellent social life.

p.s. Also helps that I am not really a geek - not half as much as the active CPians anyway. I consider myself to be a non-geek coder

Because the few odd occasions when I've been to parties or public gatherings, I've felt that I wasn't enjoying it enough because I felt awkward and shy and couldn't really keep up with everyone else. Maybe if I do that sort of stuff more often, I won't be the shy silent odd one out every single time

Fair enough, so long as you don't let it make you feel inadequate. Being a social butterfly doesn't make others better than you.

Shyness is crippling; no one knows better than I. But being the life of the party is a shallow existence, at best. Somewhere in between is optimal.
Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

That is why i stay away from places that activate my shyness. The only thing i can do, is smile until my jaw bones get stucked.

Me? Me a farmer/software-engineer and lives in a little hut beside a beautiful mountain full of purple flowers and a fresh water stream. In front of hut, there is a corn field. Snow in winter, rain in summer... sky is beautiful here. In day, I work in that field and in night I use my oil lamp and study books or use my Laptop to connect to net via mobile phone. I have also got an old truck. I go to the village (about 60 miles away) on truck to get fuel for my power generator and to get things to eat.
Life is amazing here...
tin tin tin... seven O' Clock... get up... otherwise will be late for office... and the dreams ends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All days of life are same, all evenings are same; every morning find myself on same raod; same faces...

What exactly does "social life" mean?
a) meeting family and friends
b) talking to other people on the phone / via eMail
c) talking/writing to lots of people who are not really friends
d) ...
A CPian who spends one hour each day in the Lounge talks to many people from all over the world, what a bright social life!
Somebody who understands "social life" as "going out, meeting idiots" would say that the CPian had no life at all.

I would never reduce the word "friends" to "human friends". My canary birds don't treat me like a member of the family yet, but we get along alright.

I have two turtles (red-eared sliders), one male and the other female, 10-year-old both now. I bought them since 1994 when I entered university, at the time they were as the size as coins (10 dollar coin, NT$).

Just curious. How intellegent are turtles? Do the understand when you talk to them. Have you taught them any tricks?

If measured by the IQ system which we generally know, turtles are 'stupid'. But they can distinguish people between acquaintance persons (human) and non-acquaintances, by people's face and voices, no matter what he / she dressed.
Anonymous wrote:

Basically NO. They just recognize my voice only. Even among turtles, they communicate without speech / voice. Turtles can not make any voice, at least red-eared sliders. They communicate by gestures and phiz countenance, and others like pheromone.

No. It's difficult!
