Do I have my measurement of social happiness all wrong in your opinion?
Nope. Important thing is you enjoy it or not. So you are right. If you have one great person which you enjoy with him , that great for all of yyour life. . I really get happy when I read your post althought my social life sucks.

Thanks Mazy
My social life has sucked at times - noticeably high school . However, investing time and care in people usually pays off (unless there is something wrong with the person in question). I hope things improve for you . Out of interest, at what point would a guy in Iran think about getting married? (I always seem to be asking you questions... )

Iran is a traditional country , so many people think they HAVE TO marriy because of what religion and tradition say and also because they shouldn't be alone for all of their life, but in developed part of country age of marriage get higher because of bad economical condition. Also again in developed parts , hemosexualy increased(because of many reasons) and marriage become less again(Marriage does not mean same sex mariage here). I myself one of people who belive in marriage and think everybody have a person which suite him/her in this world which should/can live with him/her all of his/her life.

Excellent philosophy!
As an aside, I've just noticed we share a birthday, although you seem to have survived 6 less of them than I have

By social life i mean spendig time with my family and friends. Having diner at a nice restaurant with a good wine and a few friends, or going to cinema or theatre, someones birthday, stuff like that.
I don't think my social life is diferent from any of my friends who are not developers, or even involved with IT.

Like Paul Watson, my social life might not fit the norm. I have a lot of special-interest friends/groups: CP people, gym friends, work friends, old friends from college who are flung across the country, etc. I don't, however, have a lot of general-purpose hanging-out friends, so while my weekdays are generally pretty packed, I don't always do much on the weekends.

Yo fit into the geek's world. What is so bad about it?

Get over this stereotyping about this geek=="cool" or "not cool". Just because we're technically competent doesn't mean we have to be socially/verbally/asthetically chanlleged to remain a "geek".

My Social Life (in the typical sense) is mostly poor now, but I intend to improve on it, and in 3 years or so hope to have an excellent social life.

p.s. Also helps that I am not really a geek - not half as much as the active CPians anyway. I consider myself to be a non-geek coder

Because the few odd occasions when I've been to parties or public gatherings, I've felt that I wasn't enjoying it enough because I felt awkward and shy and couldn't really keep up with everyone else. Maybe if I do that sort of stuff more often, I won't be the shy silent odd one out every single time

Fair enough, so long as you don't let it make you feel inadequate. Being a social butterfly doesn't make others better than you.

Shyness is crippling; no one knows better than I. But being the life of the party is a shallow existence, at best. Somewhere in between is optimal.
Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

That is why i stay away from places that activate my shyness. The only thing i can do, is smile until my jaw bones get stucked.
